NOTHING HELPS SOOTHE A LEAGUE'S INFERIORITY complex like a World Series championship.
Accordingly, the Philadelphia Phillies allowed the National League to thump its chest a bit after dispatching the upstart Tampa Bay Rays last fall to claim their first title in 28 years. It was a much-needed breakthrough for the N.L., considering the American League had won three of the previous four rifles, not to mention going 11-0-1 in the All-Star Game since 1996.
The Phillies certainly got the attention of N.L. East rival New York, which gagged down the stretch for the second consecutive year, an ongoing collapse that cost manager Willie Randolph his job. ...
