Rabies virus (RV) is the prototype member of the genus Lyssavirus, which causes acute encephalomyelitis in mammals, including humans, throughout the world. The disease is independently maintained by several species of mammals within the orders Carnivora and Chiroptera (1). Intraspecies RV transmission maintains the disease within geographically discrete (2,3) areas by distinctive virus variants and lineages, which can be identified either by panels of monoclonal antibodies or by genetic analysis (4,5).
