Kathy Lehne was a 23-year-old accountant for a petroleum distributor about to close its Houston office. Faced with the choice of moving outside her native Texas or leaving the company, she decided to launch her own business. With $2,000, Lehne started Sun Coast Resources. Twenty-four years later, the company is one of the largest petroleum marketers in the nation, with revenues topping $1 billion.
Lehne is among a growing number of women entrepreneurs who are changing the rules of the game, defying stereotypes and relying on their innate talents and instincts to achieve extraordinary success.
