TROY -- GlobalFoundries Inc., the company building a $4.2 billion computer chip factory in Malta, was created just a few months ago through a joint venture between Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
But foundries are nothing new to upstate New York.
In fact, the GlobalFoundries name was chosen in part because of the historical connection to New York state, which is providing $1.2 billion in cash and tax incentives to the project.
Back in 2006 when the project was proposed by AMD, Gov. George Pataki said construction of the fab at Luther Forest Technology Campus would be the largest corporate investment in state history.
