FLORENCE - The next time you drop that writhing Dungeness crab into a pot of boiling water, two European researchers suggest you take a minute to think about what you're doing.

Not because of the "screaming" so often heard, as gas in the crustacean's abdomen expands, venting out of tiny openings in the body cavity (crabs don't have vocal chords, so they're not actually shrieking). But because crabs actually can feel pain, according to a study done by Bob Elwood and Mirjam Appel of Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and published in the journal Animal Behaviour.
