The April 16 issue of Puerto Rico's El Nuevo Dia hit the streets with a banner headline: ATTACK ON THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. Angered by the paper's aggressive coverage of his administration -- or so El Nuevo Dia's editors alleged -- Governor Pedro Rossello had banned all governmental agencies from advertising in the island's largest daily.
But while Rossello's actions inspired outrage from international press organizations -- including the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the World Association of Newspapers, and the Inter American Press Association -- editors at the rival San Juan Star were unmoved.
