Sep. 29--Omaha-based Northern Border Pipeline Co. will employ up to 4,000 workers in six states during the next 12 months for construction of what company President Larry DeRoin said is "the largest pipeline project in the country right now."
Project Director Paul Fuhrer said the workers will be hired by 25 contractors who win bids for the $837 million project, with peak employment starting in May 1998.
The Chicago Project calls for Northern Border to build 390 miles of pipeline -- 147 miles from Ventura, Iowa, to Harper, Iowa, and 243 miles from Harper to Manhattan, Ill., a Chicago suburb.
