Sep. 26--Throughout most of 1996 and 1997, major airlines have adroitly found one way after another to raise fares, particularly those paid by business travelers. Ticket prices for many business trips are 30 percent higher than they were a year ago, and that helped the industry achieve record profits in the second quarter.
Now, travel agents say, the airlines are using the guise of reducing their operating costs to make another grab at customers' wallets, by cutting the commissions the agents receive for selling tickets. Some big-business customers could be especially hard-hit.
