This impressive book is practically three books in one. Not only has Benson Mates supplied us with the first English translation of the entirety of Sextus's Outlines of Pyrrhonism since Bury's (in 1933), he has sandwiched this translation between a comprehensive and philosophically illuminating introduction (some 84 pages) and a detailed, section-by-section commentary on the work.
The point of the book is to explain and critique Pyrrhonean skepticism and, by doing so, show that it is a philosophical viewpoint worthy of serious attention by contemporary philosophers. Sextus Empiricus (second century A.D.) is the chief source of information on this viewpoint, and ...
