Introduction
For decades, geologists have been identifying tops of geological formations on well-logs; and this has resulted in a huge database of stratigraphic "picks." A stratigraphic or formation-top pick is a measured depth along the wellbore that is picked by a geologist for a specific formation based on one or a suite of well-log curves. When formation-top picks are converted into elevations by subtracting the measured depth from the kelly bushing of the well, they represent the present-day surface of formation tops. If a fault offsets a formation top, the offset is recorded as a systematic change in the elevation values of the formation top. Fortunately, ...
