Petroleum Minister Gholam-Hossein Nozari in late 2008 said Iran had to take drastic action to curb rapid local gas use which was hampering its ambitions to become a major exporter. When Iran's gas CEOs met in Tehran in early October to discuss export plans, they could do little more than put a brave face on their efforts for Iran to become a major gas provider. In addition to US and UNSC sanctions, Nozari admitted that new government policies were urgently needed to curb rampant growth in domestic demand for natural gas.
