INTRODUCTION
Plantar fasciitis pain syndrome arises at the medial tuberosity of the calcaneum, representing a traction periostitis of the medial band of the plantar fascia. Biopsies of the plantar fascia have revealed collagen degeneration and necrosis, mucinoid degeneration, angioplastic hyperplasia, chondroid metaplasia and matrix calcification. (1,2)
A thickening, and micro-tear, of the plantar fascia also occurs with the degeneration. (2) Sewell (3) stated that the pain of plantar inflammation may sometimes be secondary to periosteal inflammation of the os calcis.
This author recommends that plantar fasciitis be defined by a grading system ...
