BOSTON - Kara Goucher choked back emotion as she recounted her performance in yesterday's 113th Boston Marathon, but her tears were flowing freely right after she crossed the finish line.
The 30-year-old had great hopes and high expectations of becoming the first American winner of the race since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach in 1985. Goucher had the lead with a mile to go, but Kenya's Salina Kosgei and Ethiopia's Dire Tune overtook her with about .7 of a mile left and the pair waged a tremendous battle to the finish. Kosgei won by a second. Goucher came in third, nine seconds back.
