PARIS OPERA BALLET PALAIS GARNIER, PARIS JUNE 30-JULY 16, 1997

Ten minutes remain before the curtain is scheduled to rise, yet it is already majestically hoisted to reveal a stark white stage awash with light. To the left, a red, yellow, and blue target. To the right, a man in white overalls sleeps on an oversized indigo stone.
It isn't until arrows begin to fly from the far right balcony, piercing the target, that Milwaukee-born choreographer John Neumeier's evening-length Sylvia actually begins. His interpretation of the postromantic ballet brought the Paris Opera Ballet's 1996-97 season to a spectacular close.
