Shih Tzu This small dog gets its name from the Chinese word shizigou--a combination of shi ("lion"), zi ("son"), and gou ("dog")--certainly a name that connotes The breed is thought, greatness. to have originated in Tibet and then been brought to China. In both countries, the religion Buddhism was (and is) widely practiced. As the lion is an animal closely associated with Buddhism, but was not native to Tibet or neighboring China, the shih tzu was bred to resemble, on a small scale, the lion--hence the name ...
