Macrolide endectocides, also called macrocyclic lactones or, colloquially, avermectins (Figure 1), have very high potencies against a broad range of economically important endoparasites and ectoparasites; hence the name endectocides. The parasites include nematodes; heart, lung, and intestinal worms; arthropods; mange mites; biting and sucking lice, fleas, and ticks (1). The avermectin macrolides include abamectin, doramectin, emamectin, eprinomectin, and ivermectin, which contain two saccharide substituents at the C13 position, and selamectin which has one saccharide substituent.
