In 1912, the Titanic was the biggest and most beautiful ship the world had ever seen. The White Star shipbuilders who made her said, "This ship is unsinkable." More than a sixth of a mile long and nearly seven stories tall, the ship wa an elegant floating city.
The Titanic's journey began in Southampton, England. On board were 2,300 passengers going to New York City, where a special pier had been built just for the giant ship.
The builders and crew of the Titanic wanted it to be not only the biggest ship ever, they wanted it to be the fastest. The ship steamed along at full speed, ignoring warnings about ice in the shipping lanes. Four days later, ...
