U.S. natural gas suppliers will likely be watching closely the progress of a new pipeline in Mexico that has just received financing for the bulk of its $275 million pricetag.
The Merida line will be Mexico's first private, open-access gas pipeline. Its location, near the Mexican border with Guatemala, means U.S. producers won't be supplying it with any gas. But with state monopoly Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) under government orders to open access to all its transmission lines by the end of the year, U.S. firms will be studying this relatively small pro- ject to understand how the rules of the game might apply to their plans for entering Mexico farther north.
