The hawk, with an eye only for the pieces of raw meat draped all over my husband's right arm - well, actually the long leather glove, or gauntlet over his arm - nearly grazed my head as it flew down from its perch in a tree.

He was the one learning the basics of falconry. I was just taking photographs, and I definitely did not want facial talon scars as a remembrance of the day. Nor did I fancy becoming part of Scout's (the hawk) afternoon snack.
