Weight loss reduces morbidity and mortality among type 2 diabetics who are overweight, but achieving and maintaining weigh loss is often challenging. Adjustable gastric banding is being promoted as an effective way to control weight. This laparoscopic surgical procedure limits food intake by installing a silicone band around the upper stomach and, thereby, decreases the amount of food that the stomach can hold.
