Introduction
Concern about the environmental impacts of chemical wood preservatives has resulted in increased interest for natural wood durability. In Norway and many other European countries the heartwood of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) has traditionally been used for structures exposed to conditions that increase the risk of decay. While the heartwood of Scots pine is regarded as moderately durable (CEN 1994) and can attain a long service life in aboveground conditions, the sapwood can deteriorate rapidly in conditions that are favorable to decay.
