Introduction

In boreal and temperate vegetation zones, the radial increment of trees is a dynamic process, and the rate of accumulation of new woody material varies considerably during the year. Cumulative wood formation typically follows a S-shaped curve, with slow increment during spring and early summer, fast increment in midsummer, and a gradually decreasing rate towards autumn (e.g., Popescu et al. 1968; Schmitt et al. 2004).
