TAIPEI, May 1 Asia Pulse - Premier Liu Chao-shiuan said Wednesday that Taiwan, given its experience in fighting the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, will be able to ride out any possible impact of a swine flu epidemic.

Liu made the remarks as Taiwan on Wednesday launched on-board checks of passengers on flights arriving from North America.

Earlier in the day, Department of Health Minister Yeh Ching-chuan said Taiwan had been in contact with the United States, seeking samples of the H1N1 swine flu virus strain so local pharmaceutical companies could start developing a human vaccine.
