Rafael Augusto Bordalo Pinheiro, one of the most famous and successful Portuguese ceramists in history, is virtually unknown in the United States. He was born in Lisbon into a family of distinguished artists. His father, Manuel Maria Bordalo Pinheiro (1815-1880), was a civil servant and prolific artist who produced an extraordinary number of paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, and even stage designs. Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro received his first lessons in drawing and modeling in his father's studio and at the age of fourteen was enrolled in a nearby art school, the Liceu das Merceeiras.
