Seventy years ago, Mildred Marcalus asked her husband, Nicholas, to help her solve a problem. The only wrap available for sandwiches and leftovers was wax paper, which came in flat sheets that stuck together in warm kitchens. Nicholas, an Italian immigrant and self-taught engineer, came up with a solution that won him his first of over 50 patents: a roll of wax paper in a convenient dispenser with a cutting edge. When Cut-Rite paper entered American kitchens in 1927, wrapping food was never the same.
