Leaders of Hong Kong's main non-Christian religions see the former British rule of the region as "shameful," according to Kwong Chun Wah, a clergyman who teaches at Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary Commenting on the religious situation in Hong Kong after the handover of power to Beijing, Kwong suggested that the religious leaders hoped that Hong Kong's return to China would end the preference of the religion's authorities for Christianity. Most Hong Kong citizens are followers of the Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian faiths, but Christian institutions play a significant role in the territory.
