Introduction
The relationship between obligation and leisure is complex. Research shows obligation can facilitate leisure (Gibson, Willming, Holdnak, 2002; Glover, Parry & Shinew, 2005; Laverie, 1998; Maguire, 2008; Mannel, Zuzanek & Larson, 1988) and at other times impede it (Davidson, 1996; Dupuis, 2000; Shaw, 1992). Obligation as an impediment to leisure is rooted in classical Greek notions of leisure that give prominence to perceived freedom (Goodale & Godbey, 1988).
