For many on board the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), serving on this ship is more than just fulfilling a sea tour obligation.

CDR Harry Thetford is one of those. He requested to join the crew of USS Iwo Jima and reported as the Supply Officer in May of 2007, 62 years after his cousin Private First Class Walter Thetford, served on Iwo Jima Island.
The Battle of Iwo Jima began on Feb. 21, 1945, when the first wave of Marines hit the beach. PFC Thetford was among those. He served with the 3rd Marine Division and fought on Iwo Jima for nine days before being seriously wounded. A Japanese rocket landed amongst his platoon while they ...
