After much ado, Microsoft has finally responded to Novell's Novell Directory Services (NDS) and announced Active Directory, its entry into the enterprise-level directory service market. It is slated for arrival in mid-1998.

The absence of directory services has been a definite sticking point for Microsoft thus far. As part of the first beta release of Windows NT Server 5.0, Active Directory will provide new directory capabilities that are easier to administer than most of the competition.
