Combining different metals could create alloys with properties that are superior to both metals, though that is not true of all metals. But an international research team discovered that previously impossible alloys can be created by subjecting atoms to high pressure.

The Carnegie Institution for Sciences' Hokwang Mao (also an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Jiang Jian-zhong of the International Center for New-Structured Materials at Zhejiang University, China, led the research.
