Oct. 21--Philadelphia Gas Works hopes to lure away as many as 5,000 customers of Peco Energy Co. by offering a 10 percent cut in monthly electric bills, a free month of electricity, and a $15 bonus, PGW officials told City Council Monday.
The city-owned gas works is trying to enter the deregulated energy market and become a retail provider of electricity in Philadelphia. A bill supported by Mayor Rendell has been introduced in Council to permit PGW to take part in a state pilot program on deregulation.
The pilot program, authorized by state legislation last year, runs from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, 1998. A total of 75,000 Peco customers from this ...
