Dubai: Sri Lanka expects tourist arrivals from the Middle East to increase 30 per cent this year as the country promotes itself as a "value for money" destination in these tough times for the tourism sector.

Faiszer Musthapha, deputy minister of tourism, said the efforts to woo people from the Gulf is part of a focused strategy to get more short-haul tourists because the traditional source countries such as Europe and Japan are in the grip of a recession.
