Senators from Texas and California, who believe that depot legislation in the FY '98 Defense Authorization Bill would result in the transfer of weapons maintenance workload from their states to other states, yesterday began an attempt to delay consideration of the bill.
The House on Tuesday night voted 286 to 123 to approve the bill, which authorizes $268.2 billion in spending.
By making it more difficult for the Senate to move forward with the bill at a time when the Senate is rushing to complete legislative business for the year, the senators hope to convince their colleagues to compromise on the language. Congress hopes to adjourn by next weekend.
