Pop quiz: What's more profitable--selling one $30 photo book or 250 prints sized 4-by-6-inches?
Well, the profit is about the same; but most customers don't come close to making 250 prints in a year, according to the 2008 PMA Photo Book Report. Photo books account for 8.8 percent of the custom photo gift market and 17 percent of retail printing customers, says the report.
The books have been around for about 10 years, and consumers are helping them grow into a custom photo gift sensation. Given the growth, does it now make sense for retailers to produce photo books in-house?
