BEFORE we consider the state of the race for mayor on Tuesday, cast your memory back for a moment to a better time.

It was March 2005, and we were in the midst of another re-election race for another mayor. Then-City Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa was one of a handful of experienced politicians running to unseat Mayor James Hahn, including Councilman Bernard Parks, former Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg and then-state Sen. Richard Alarcon.
