WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio----The Air Force's "newest" research laboratory became operational Nov. 1 following reorganization of the service's various research organizations into one central lab, according to Air Force officials here.
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is responsible for research and technology development in support of the Air Force's future and existing aircraft and weapon systems. It was formed by realigning and consolidating the work of 22 directorates, spread throughout four Air Force research laboratories, into nine directorates and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the officials added.
