Kent Mountford's fingers brushed the black loam of the Patuxent River's towering banks. Embedded in the exposed bank was a running stratum of oyster and sea shells. He used a finger to scoop some earth and extracted a scallop shell "that's about 20 million years old," he said. He poked a finger into an opening in an embedded oyster, and withdrew it quickly as a large and aggrieved spider scurried out.
