Editor's Note: Hungary is moving back into the mainstream of European life as it is about to enter NATO and hopes to be among the first of the ex-Communist countries to join the European Union. This is an opportune time to examine one of the crucial events of Hungarian history in this century. This article is based on extracts from the memoirs of Miklos Banffy (1873-1950).
