At $1.65 billion in annual sales personal soaps are an important volume builder and traffic generator for mass market retailers. That is especially true for supermarkets, since the segment represents the only area of skin care where that trade class dominates.
Of the $1.36 billion in mass market sales of personal bar soap for the 52 weeks through the first half of this year, food stores accounted for $753.6 million - more than 55% - according to Information Resources Inc. (IRI). Similarly, supermarkets claim a 53.4% market share in personal liquid soaps, generating $156 million of that segment's total volume of $292.1 million.
