I was pleased to see the recent examination of the foster care system in Clinical Psychiatry News ("Foster Care: Casey Program a Good Model," Prevention in Action, July 2008, p. 38). But I am also concerned that current approaches to improving the foster care system are somewhat shortsighted.
At present, I serve as medical director of a public clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., that is the medical home for children in foster care and nearby homeless shelters. Anyone even vaguely familiar with foster care understands that it is a revolving door, or worse, a trap door.
