Around 1 p.m. Thursday, when N. Proctor Peebles III saw the envelope on his desk, he knew the business his father started 60 years ago was coming to an end.

Waverly Motors Inc., just past Wakefield about 55 miles from Norfolk, has sold Chrysler vehicles since 1949. The small rural dealership - which moved five to 10 cars or trucks in its best months and one or two per month more recently - started with Dodge, added a Chrysler Plymouth dealership and finally took on Jeep in 1998.
