PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Nov. 11--It's becoming difficult to get a fix on the Rhode Island economy.
Is it a laggard in the region, adding jobs but at a pace well behind the rest of the New England states?
Or is it better than that, with local employers doing enough hiring to send state tax revenues zooming past expected levels?
The head-scratching started last week when state revenue estimators said that general tax revenue estimates for the current fiscal year are up an impressive 3.3 percent over revenue raised last year. That easily exceeds the 1 percent increase they originally forecast.
