Article: TEN years ago, when Gay Byrne retired from the Late Late Show, RTE had been somewhat caught on the hop. It's not that it didn't know that he would have to retire one day, and that it would need to come up with a plan going, as they say, forward. But somehow it hadn't addressed the issue. The resulting "process" was messy and was felt not to show the organisation's management in a good light.
