Out of the billions of suns in the universe, with potentially trillions more planets orbiting their distant stars, as of July 1997 there have been exactly nine planets discovered outside our solar system.
This isn't a problem for Harvard-trained astronomer Ken Croswell, author of ````Planet Quest: The Epic Discovery of Alien Solar Systems'' (Free Press, $25), because this search has just begun.
At the International Cafe in his hometown of Berkeley, Calif., he described the quest.
