A thousand acres is a melodramatic story about an Iowa farm family ripped apart by incest and greed. In the end it asserts that one might find hope in children, in sisterhood and in new beginnings, but for 145 minutes it paints a picture of anger, depravity and dysfunction.
Larry Cook (Jason Robards) has successfully built his Iowa farm into a thousand acres of fertile productivity. With his two oldest daughters, Ginny Cook Smith (Jessica Lange) and Rose Cook Lewis (Michelle Pfeiffer), close at hand, he seems to have a good life.
