Nov. 23--Hardwood floors are making a comeback after losing popularity 40 years ago to wall-to-wall carpeting.

Hardwood floor production had bottomed out in 1982, according to the National Wood Flooring Association. Then, slowly but surely, industry officials noticed an increase in demand. By 1992 the amount of floor board sold was 11.4 percent above the year before and sales have been growing ever since, industry figures show.

That trend is reflected in Bakersfield where hardwood floor installation companies Bailey Denney & Associates, The Flooring Gallery and the Hardwood Floor Co. reported a doubling of sales in the last year.
