THE CLOSEST thing to an international transaction that many community banks do is to issue traveler's checks for customers going abroad. Then there's The Hemisphere National Bank in Miami.
Hemisphere, a $55-million institution founded in 1979, has received approval for an international banking network in which it will form alliances with five Latin American banks in five countries: Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. In time, Hemisphere hopes to add others to the network.
Hemisphere is launching the alliances with the help of a huge new capital infusion that boosted its capital to $15 million-giving it a whopping risk-based capital ratio of 62%. It ...
