PROVIDENCE, R.I. _ Kenneth M. Clement's life changed some years ago when a friend's horse, sick and ready to be put down, was treated by an acupuncturist. As Clement tells it, acupuncture saved the horse's life. No way, he thought, was this cure all in the animal's head.

Clement, then in his mid-30s and working as a salesman, headed for Boston, a three-year course at the New England School of Acupuncture, and a new career.
