The Norwegian government has proposed opening up new areas for oil and gas exploration in the icy waters around Jan Mayen Island in the Arctic Ocean, about 500 kilometers east of Greenland.
In a management plan presented to parliament for approval last week, Oslo also calls for a ban on exploration in parts of the southern Norwegian Sea, including Morebankene--an important area for herring stocks--and the coral-rich Sularevet and Iverryggen areas.
All licensing in these prospective areas will be halted by a government moratorium until the management plan is updated in 2014, pending the results of environmental assessments.
