If not for cashew nutshell liquid, Cardolite Corp. (Newark, NJ) would be just another small chemical company. But cashew oil, a metasubstituted alkenyl phenol, is a critical commodity. Cashew-based friction modifying particles retain their shape under extreme heat and stabilize friction levels when added to brake composites. "In short, the heat-resistant cashew formulation prevents brake fade and reduces brake lining wear," says Anthony M. Stonis, Cardolite's 51-year-old coowner, president, and prime mover.
